The Elite downhill races that many fans consider as the ‘Blue Ribbon’ events of any UCI MTB World Championships ended with two surprising winners who were able to take advantage of the challenging course conditions to clearly beat the pre-races favorites thanks inspired runs down the treacherous ‘La Derup’ course.
Eight years after his victory in the UCI Junior Worlds at Lugano, in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, Czech’s Jaroslav Kulhavy celebrated his first-ever elite Cross-Country World Championship title on Saturday afternoon in Champéry after quite a dramatic race. The victory crowned a perfect season for the tall Specialized rider who had also captured the World Cup overall title a couple of weeks go in Val di Sole, Italy, after winning a total of four stages.

After a series of thrilling runs and breathtaking finals, Anneke Beerten from The Netherlands and Michael Prokop from the Czech Republic prevailed in the 4 X competitions organized under intense limelight on the newly built course designed nearby the treacherous ‘La Derup’ downhill track at Grand Paradis.

France Julie Bresset dominated as expected the women U23 competition hold this afternoon on the Grand Paradis cross-country course outside of Champéry. The 22-year-old World Cup champion achieved another impressive performance at that occasion collecting her first ever UCI rainbow jersey. A month after winning gold at the European Championships in Slovakia, she crossed the finish line with a comfortable advance of 1.30 minutes on Great Britain’s Annie Last while another French rider, U23 World Cup champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot was 3rd at 5.47 minutes.

A day after clinching a superb gold medal in the Team Relay event, the French riders celebrated another UCI World title today at Champéry where Victor Koretzky dominated the men’s junior competition raced on the treacherous Cross Country course at Grand Paradis.
